A display becomes less viewable in a bright ambient light. In a bright ambient environment, the light from the sun competes with the light from the display and the perceived contrast goes down.
There are 2 main approaches to making a LCD sunlight readable:
- Higher brightness via brighter backlight
- Higher brightness via 'transflective' technology
Ascenstar's High Brightness Sunlight Readable Displays have brightness levels from 700 nits to 2000 nits and certainly outperform commercially available non-enhanced products that washout in direct and/or indirect sunlight conditions.
Although a display with less than 500 nits screen brightness and a mere 2 to 1 contrast ratio can be read in outdoor environments, the quality of the display will be extremely poor. A truly sunlight readable display is typically considered to be an LCD with 700 nits or greater screen brightness. In outdoor environments, such a display can provide an excellent image quality.
